Research Paper- Negative Effects on Children by Watching Tv

We do not believe there is anything sexist or violent about the World Wrestling Federation. I think its unfair of you to insinuate it when there are so many shows and so many different movies, and so many different social problems that really do contribute to violence in this country. -- UPN president Dean Valentine in 1999 after a 7-year-old child in Dallas killed his little brother with a clothesline maneuver he had seen on a wrestling show. TV is a World of Good and Bad Even though both criminals and cops can both commit justifiable violence -- television is still a simple medium. TV presents good guys and bad guys. On average, there are 15 minutes of commercials for every one hour of TV programming, so producers only have a short amount of time in which to establish plot, story, characters and resolution. Good characters and bad characters must be quickly and simply established. Deeper, more realistic, more ambiguous characterizations make it hard for viewers to know who to root for. It also requires more screen time that takes away from on screen action, states the Center for Media Literacy. As a result, TV and film criminals are reduced to caricatures. They are l00% bad. No one could care about them. They have no families. Many of them dont even have full names, only nick names. They deserve no sympathy and they get what they deserve. The bad guys, whether they are cops or robbers, have to be 100% bad to justify the violence against them. Television violence is the struggle of good versus evil. Its OK to shoot the bad guy -- after all, hes the bad guy. According to the study by the Center for Media and Public Affairs, the most violent show observed in 1999 was CBS Walker, Texas Ranger. This show took the top spot for overall violence with a rate of 112 acts per show, over two-thirds of them (82) serious. Answer: Introduction: Employability and Professional development refers to the continuous process of regulating the responses and reflecting the current working ability of the individuals. The activities of this process help the employees to have better growth in their carrier by understanding the abilities and limitations in the workplaces (Alirezaei, 2013). In these activities the strengths and weaknesses in the current job position are evaluated. After evaluating these factors, the aim of the individuals is to eliminate the limitations or weaknesses and then increase the abilities to give better performances in the workplaces (Fischer and Boer, 2014). This report is based on the reflection of the experiences gathered in the current job position in a computer software development company. The company is providing the ERP software and cloud computing platform to the different business industries. The working ability, weaknesses and other activities like the team work, problem solving etc. will be evaluated through this report. Personal and Professional Development within the workplace: Personal and professional development is the key to get success in the future. In this process the ability and weaknesses are evaluated by the analysis of the different working situations and reflecting the experience as an individual and as a group member. The motivational factors of the Rogers theory and Maslows hierarchy of needs brought the clarity regarding the skills of carrying out the responsibilities within the workplace (Coombs and Sorensen, 2010). In order to analyze the different strengths and weaknesses of the analytical skills and the emotional intelligences have to be clarified. The skill audit matrix will help to understand the factors at a glance (refer to appendix 1). As per the analysis of my abilities, the various strengths found are as follows: Active learning: One of the greatest strength of my professional field is the activeness in learning. I like to learn new methods and techniques with more advanced tools for achieving the goal in the workplace (Arthur, 2010). Spirit of taking the initiatives: I am always ready to take the initiatives for every type of tasks and other activities within the workplace. Whenever any new type of responsibilities came, I am there to take it where maximum people are scared (Benson, 2014). Abilities of critical thinking: I have the ability of critically think about the factors of the tasks that are needed to be done. It gives me more power to efficiently complete the task (Jones, 2013). Ability of achieving the target by focusing on the goal: Whenever engaged in any type of job in the workplace I only focus at the goal of the job. It helps me to achieve the desired target. Any type of side focusing may be the cause of distracting from the main objective (Gasbarri and Tomaz, 2012). Developing innovative ideas: There are various types of jobs in the field of the software development that can be managed more efficiently by adopting some new innovative ideas. There are many examples of jobs where some innovative ideas are used which were developed by me (Haasler, 2013). Leadership: I am able to take the leadership within the workplace. Now I am working as a team member of the development team, but in some days I had to manage the team as a leader. The experience if these are not so bad as the result of the job was good (Belbin, 2012). The above strengths are very helpful to me for giving the best performances within the workplace. These abilities are very important in the area of the software development job. Besides the above mentioned strengths I have also found some weaknesses in my performances. The weaknesses are as follows: Impatient: The worst factor of my behavior is the impatience. I cannot wait too long for anything. I am always in hurry, trying to finish the job without any delay. Because of this reason, I faced some problems within the workplace (Laughton, 2011). Impulsive behavior: While analyzing my weaknesses with the help of my working experiences in the workplace, I found some impulsive nature in my behavior. It happened because of the eagerness of doing something which I supposed to do but I was not permitted. It is not s good as I observed that the supervisors and the team members were not happy in such incidents (Manchester, 2013). Lack of planning: There were some lacks of planning at the time of doing some jobs, because of more focusing on the main goal of the task. There are some additional tasks associated with any big jobs. Sometimes, I missed out some of these tasks due to the lack of planning (Meybodi, 2009). Lack of some social skills: Although my social skills are not so bad, but I found that some social skills have to be improvised for delivering a better attitude within the workplace (Miller et al. 2013). Over powering to team members: As I am able to lead a team and I have done this many time as a senior employee, I used to overpowering to some team members in some cases. It is not intended, I should minimize this factor of my behavior (Urosevic and Milijic, 2012). Using the trial and error method: Due to the impatient behavior, I used to follow the concept of Think less Do more. Because of this, I always use the trial and error method instead of concrete plan for the tasks within the workplace (Saunders and Zuzel, 2010). These are the main weaknesses as I found in the analysis by observing my past working experiences within the workplace. In order to achieve a well development in my personal and professional skills I have to increase the strengths I have and eliminate the weaknesses. This is not so easy task as I say and I have done. A good strategy is needed for this task. In order to achieve the better personal and professional development an action plan has to be developed as shown in the appendix 2. The action plan for this purpose is often called as the Personal Development Plan (PDP). In order to develop and then using the PDP, the factors which need more improvisation have to be identified. As per the above analysis and skill audit matrix, the various factors of my skills that need more improvisation are as follows: Communication Skill: After summarizing the results of the weakness analysis, I found that some areas of my communication skills have to be improved for giving better performances within the workplace (Bush, 2014). Cognitive Behavior: I have to change the way if thinking in some cases. The cognitive behavior therapy will help me to improve this section of my behavior (Takano et al.2011). Planning: More planning is needed rather than the use of trial and error method while doing any job in the workplace (Thompson, 2010). Behavior with the team member: I have to behave gentle with all the team members. Although I am a senior employee, but I have to treat the team members with equality as we are all in the same level (Trivellas and Reklitis, 2014). Negotiation Skill: Another area of my behavior which needs a lot of improvisation is the skill of negotiating in the different issues with the team members and the supervisors (Gasbarr and Tomaz, 2012). The understanding of the weaknesses in the previous section helped me to identify these factors for planning my future development where the identification of the strengths gave me the idea regarding my future prospects with more clarifications. Interpersonal and transferable skills within the workplace: At the present situation, when the world of employment is highly associated with the high level of turnover and mobility, the interpersonal and transferable skills are very important to give the opportunity of getting a better place in the same organization or in some other organizations. These are the skills that employers are finding at the time of interviewing for the recruitment purpose. Self awareness is very important for identifying the interpersonal and transferrable skills. These skills are developed through evaluating the previous working experiences (Cabanis-Brewin, 2011). The interpersonal and transferrable skills will be identified by the examples of the previous work done in the workplace. According to my previous performances, delegating power and listening power are the most effective two skills within the context of the Soft skills (Forman et al. 2014). In the analytical skills, I have the power of doing the research, data collection and data analysis very well. The tasks of the company are duly associated with the technical skills. The software development is fully dependent on the technical skill i.e., the language development, SQL queries and other coding. As I am a senior employee of the company, I have the sufficient technical skills needed in this field. Our work within the workplace is purely teamwork. Therefore, I used to work within a team for completing any jobs in the workplace. Some examples of the previous works are discussed in the section below, which are indicating my interpersonal and transferrable skills with references to my social role within the workplace. Dealing with a customer: One day there were some queries regarding the order raised by a customer. The manger was dealing with him, but he wanted to know some specific elements of the product and the actual status of the job. As I was working on the project, the manger referred me to deal with that customer. Then I have talked with him and answered all the questions he asked. The customer was satisfied and my manger appreciated me for the job. Team leading: I also have the experience of leading the team when my supervisor was absent. As I am a senior employee in the workplace, I have the responsibility of leading the team when the supervisors were not present to lead the team. The experiences of these incidents are very good. The days in which I managed the work of the whole team, no issues raised regarding t he quality and management of the work. Communicate with the colleagues: As the whole work is basically teamwork, I used to communicate with my colleagues or the team members. I have the ability of co-operating with the team members by communicating with them in a gentle manner. Meeting with the manager: I used to talk to the manager regarding the various responsibilities of the jobs and some other social issues. I think that the way of communicating with the manager is not bad as I dont have any bad experience with him. Time effectiveness of the output is the most important part of any job. While doing any job, one has to be very conscious regarding the deadline of the job. In order to meet the deadline, proper planning is the key factor. I used to focus on the main goal of the task I have to complete. This is very helpful to complete the tasks without distracting from the streamline of work. Whenever a new project comes to the office, an analysis is being done by the team members who are associated with the task (French et al. 2011). After the initial level of analysis, the goal of the work and the deadline is being assigned to the task depending on the various tasks needed to be completed to fulfill the requirements of the total job as per the need of the customer. Likewise any other job, the jobs of this company have the main target to fulfill all the needs of the customers and providing the best services with a timely delivery of the products. In order to achieve the complete work within the dea dline, I used to make a schedule of the total task I have to complete by splitting the total task into some sub parts and also by dividing the timeline into some smaller frame work (Fitjar et al. 2014). Then by completing each sub parts within the calculated time frame, I used to complete the total task within the time limit assigned for it. After completing the subparts by the team members the total task is combined to get the actual product for the customers. As a senior employee of the organization I have the responsibility of combining all the sub tasks done by the team members. This takes some time to be done and after combining the parts, the software has to be tested for the efficiency. Because of this issue, the initial deadline is set to a prior time than the customers deadline. This gives us the time for checking the product and then removing the errors. In this way I used to manage the time limit of the jobs. Dynamics of working with others within the workplace: In order to demonstrate the ability of the team work here is an example of team work within the workplace. Activity: An order was placed to the company for developing an ERP system for a FMCG company. A team of eight employees was assigned to complete the total task. I was one of the eight team members in this project. The team members were assigned with different types of responsibilities for developing the software. I was assigned with the responsibility of doing the survey for identifying the needs of the customer and assisting the team. Distribution of the roles and participating in the team work was not easy at that time as all the tasks are interdependent. This particular project was tough to handle due to the diversifications of the clients requirements and the limitation in the budget. We faced sum difficulties in understanding the actual requirements of the client, but we tried to give our best performance to meet the deadline and satisfy all the needs of the customer. Different opinions were given by the team members regarding the task which was very helpful for completing the total solut ion for the client. We delivered the final solution to the client one month later after testing it and doing the needed changes as per the requirement. The client was very happy as the final solution was able to meet the requirements. The team got appreciated by the supervisor and the manager for performing well in this project. Reflection: The project was a challenging task to be completed for every team member as the instructions were given to perform appropriate for achieving the best result. The total development process and the testing phase within the specified budget required a good strategy for being completed. We followed the theoretical frame work as suggested by Gratch (2014), for the group development process. We initiated a well strategy for communication and developed a supportive management within the team to perform accordingly. While linking the practical situation with the theory, I found there were both of the innovative members and adaptable members. The innovative members gave some new ideas for the development and the adaptable members followed the ideas. According to Bruhn and Zia (2013), I found myself acting as the Investigator in the team. I was very enthusiastic in my role and implemented some innovative ideas for efficiently completing the survey to understand the needs of the customer. Interacting with different people in the survey and collecting information regarding the requirements was difficult to handle. The level of utilizing the abilities was same for all the team members. I was giving my best performance with the use of my creative thinking and knowledge while other team members were giving their best effort in the code development by using their technical skills. The executers and the testers were also giving their best effort in the tasks they have assigned. Some issues regarding the communicational behavior were observed in the behavior of the team members. By following the theory of Tarim (2014), I was able to eliminate the ego problems and some childish behaviors of the team members. In the first phase of the testing the several problem were found in the newly developed ERP system. Then the theory of the communication cycle as stated by Venkateswarlu (2012), helped me a lot in understanding the reason behind the failure in the development. Some communication gaps were found among the team members. In order to achieve the success in the first attempt, more communication was needed among the team members (Yuen et al. 2015). I found some communication gap in my behavior also. The one-to-one communication was good but I faced some issues in the communication with groups. After understanding these issues by the analysis of the situation after the first testing phase, we were able to fix the problems and then the software was delivered to the client. Another way of team work: Here is another strategy suggested for the efficient team work. In this strategy, the abilities of the team members are analyzed first. Then the tasks are divided depending on the specialty of the team members (Evans and Hargreaves, 2010). After deciding the roles of different team members the feed backs will be taken from them to understand their viewpoints regarding the responsibilities they are given by the team leader or manager. According to Du Toit and Reissner (2012), if any team member is not satisfied with their role in the team work, then the result if the task cannot be efficient enough to reflect the business of the organization. After this stage if any unsatisfied team members are found then the cause of this situation should be analyzed and then the team member should be assigned with some other responsibilities depending on the situation and the ability of the member (Konradt, 2014). All the team members will be communicated with the importance of the responsibilities they have to complete the task. The team leader will use the way of face-to-face communication at the time of distributing the tasks and delivering any instruction. This will be very helpful for the monitoring process and evaluate the effective practice of the team work. After this assigning period is over, the status of the tasks should be checked periodically (Scott, 2010). The team leader will involved in the monitoring process and will ensure that the simultaneous activities of the team members are going well and are in the same level. All the communicational and other problems will be removed at the initial level in this method (Sonea, 2014). This is very helpful for getting a problem free work in the first attempt. This method of team work will help the organization to produce efficient software products in less time. Development of strategies for problem solving within the workplace: Working with a team within the workplaces is not an easy task. I faced many problems within the workplace which are really hard to be solved, but every time I got success in solving the problems. Here is an example of the workplace problem with the discussion regarding the solving method of the problem. Activity: Seven new employees have joined the company four months ago. The candidates were from different countries. In the beginning they were facing some problems and lack of interests in the job because of the different language, culture, working behavior etc. I was appointed to give them cross-cultural training to develop more interest in their mind by understanding and habituated with the language and culture of the country. The issues regarding the culture and communication gap are very harmful for the company. In order to give them practical training and improving the communication skills of the new people, they were assigned to handle some customers belonging from different regions with different types of background with different types of cultures. I was instructed to give them proper training in these areas as well as on the functional areas of the company. After starting the training process I found that it is very tough to handle the training of these types of employees within the organization. I found some difficulties to communicate with them due to the differences in the languages and cultures. I gave instructions to introduce themselves to each other and to share the cultural values of the local culture they belong to. I trained them by giving them some trial tasks in practical. After a time period of only one month the new employees were ready to give their best effort to thee company. I was able to manage the problematic situation and then performed the task of a trainer very well. Reflection: I f aced some problems in individuals regarding their expressions due the differences in the culture and language. As stated by Watson, (2013), the organizational culture should be injected to the employees as the common work place culture. At the beginning level the new employees were feeling embarrassed as they were unable to understand the organizational values. I also faced some issues regarding their acceptances of the different factors of the organization and the value of my role. In order to remove this issue, I used the theory of SOLER as stated by Torrente et al. (2012), for analyzing their non-verbal communication styles for increasing the level of acceptance. As per the opinion of Oakley et al. (2012), the trial works are very helpful to understand the organizational values and the way of doing the jobs. Theory of the cultural dimension given by Yeadon-Lee and Hall, (2013), is saying that the value of individualism is higher than the value of PDI. In the training phase I h ave used the method of sharing the cultural values of the organization to the seven team members and also influenced them in two-way and the multi way communication for understanding their perspective regarding the culture (Moldovan, 2015). There were some difficulties in my own communication. I used some trials to remove these implications. The team members were increasing their learning skills slowly but after the first week they were very enthusiastic about the learning. I also faced some problems regarding the time management because of some emotions were attached in the training of the cultural values. Brainstorming was used for developing some innovative ideas for helping the team members to build a good relationship among the as well as with the organization. As stated by Rosa et al. (2011), communication phases helped me a lot to manage the linguistic issues within the team. The team members were individually motivated to develop their linguistic skills and the need of acceptance of the organizational culture (Westerlund, 2011). This task was very helpful for understanding my own ability of handling the value of different culture and the pattern of my own behavior through my self-image. The team members helped me a lot to remove some negative implications regarding the rural culture. After the training was over, the team members were well trained for serving the customers and performing well in the different types of jobs. The level of improvements was reflected in the behaviors of the team members. After a few days they were very happy to learn the different aspects of the organizational culture. Conclusion: The employment skills are very important to understand for the purpose of professional development. The different strengths and weaknesses of the current skills are analyzed with the help of the attached skills audit matrix and then the action plan is given in the attached PDP for the further improvement of the professional skills. The strengths of the current skills have to be increased where the weaknesses have to be minimized for giving more effective performances within the workplace. After analyzing the different factors of the previous working experiences within the workplace the ability of team leading and the technical skills are most important interpersonal and transferrable skills. Many types can arise in the workplace. In order to solve the problems efficient team work and the innovative thinking are the key elements. Training is the most important part of developing the professional kills. An example of the problem solving is given in this assignment with reference to a t raining process. Though Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano shared similarities in experiences, they had different writing personalities, purposes, attitudes, tones, and relations with their communities. There are four main modes of discourse: expository, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive. In Mary Rowlandson’s A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, it is apparent in the title that it is a narrative. Like Mrs. Rowlandson’s literature, Olaudah Equiano’s From Africa to America is a narrative. A narrative form of literature is a story, account of events, or experiences, whether it is true or fictitious. Both narratives are similar in the experiences the two authors possessed. Both Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano were held captive at a time in their lives. White men captured Olaudah Equiano, while Mary Rowlandson had Indian captivators. Olaudah’s story tells of the time where he first saw the slave ship he was put on and the journey across great waters to the new world. Rowlandson’s story tells of the apathy of the Indians and her stay with the tribe. It is apparent that the journey across the sea was horrible enough for the ship’s passengers to commit suicide by jumping off of the ship rather than staying on board with the putrid smell of human wastes and lack of ventilation. In a brief paragraph, Equiano wrote of his daily routine before his captivity. He mentioned the relationship he had with his mother, and how he was her favorite child. â€Å"I became, of course, the greatest favorite with my mother and was always with her. (72) Olaudah and Mary were alike because Olaudah had a great relationship with his mother while Mary was fond of her own child in her narrative. â€Å"About two hours in the night, my sweet babe like a lamb departed this life†¦ I must and could lie down next to my dead babe, side by side all the night after. † (2) Neither Olaudah Equiano nor Mary Rowlandson ended their stories with the family membe rs they were most fond of. Equiano’s captivity was the reason why he was stripped from his mother while Rowlandson’s baby died during her captivity. In trying times such as these, Rowlandson prayed to God for aid. Being a faithful Puritan, Rowlandson often read her bible during difficult times. She would find and read Psalms that related to her own life’s problems and conflicts. Although Mary Rowlandson turned to God in her times of need, Olaudah Equiano did not once mention any sort of a god. Rowlandson believed that with her faith in God and to feel sorry for past conducts, she would be forgiven and promised that curses will be turned onto her enemies. â€Å"I came to chapter 30, the seven first verses, where I found, there was mercy promised again, if we would return to Him by repentance.. (3) Rowlandson quoted Psalm 27 ver. ult. , â€Å"Wait on the Lord, Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine Heart, wait I say, on the Lord. † (3) This quote showed that Rowlandson had an undying faith in the Lord. A relationship was held with the Lord for Rowlandson, and not Equiano. Although Equiano did not have a relationship with God, he and Rowlandson both had different types o f relationships with their communities and peers. Mary Rowlandson had an apathetic relationship with the New England Wampanoag Indians. The tribe had no sympathy for the death of Mary’s six-year-old daughter. The Indians took the young daughter from the mother and buried her on top of a hill. Though they buried the child for Rowlandson, they did not give the mother permission to look after the dead child nor let her keep the corpse with her. They had no sympathy because they told her she had to leave her child. Rowlandson had a fair relationship with the other woman and children that were also kidnapped. The other captives shared a faith in God with Mary. Mary read a Psalm to the other woman captive, who was pregnant and had the desire to escape and run away. Mary read a Psalm that explained that God would help you hold on through hard times. (3) While Mary had relations with the people around her, Olaudah had his. Equiano had mainly fellow Africans as his peers. All of these Africans were in the same situation because they all were taken onto the slave ship from their homes to go to America as slaves to the white men. Olaudah did not speak at all to another person in his narrative, which showed that his relationship with his community was poor. The relationships these two authors had with their communities showed readers a little bit of their personalities. It is apparent that Mary Rowlandson is more extrovert than Olaudah Equiano. Rowlandson communicated with the people she was surrounded by. Olaudah Equiano showed that he was more introvert than Mary Rowlandson because he did not attempt to have any sort of conversation with another being. He only spoke of what he saw going on in the lives of the people around him in his story, and there was no dialogue. Mary Rowlandson’s personality was more apparent than Olaudah Equiano’s because she showed that she was a caring woman. She did not want to leave her child behind, even though it was already dead. Mary was also caring and loving because she took the time to go through bible scriptures and Psalms with another woman to give her the hope and guidance she needed from their Lord. Following the Lord was one of Mary’s main purposes in life. Mary Rowlandson used the rhetoric device appeal to authority in her literature. She spoke of God as if He were somehow relevant to every aspect of her life, whereas Equiano mainly used appeal to emotion in his work. Olaudah spoke of the slavery and apprehensions on the slave ship and in the new world. â€Å".. Much dread and trembling among us and nothing but bitter cries to be heard all the night.. † (74) There was also figurative language used in Mrs. Rowlandson’s excerpt. â€Å"My sweet babe like a lamb. † (2) Mary might have compared her child to a lamb in order to describe her as a sweet, shy, pure and innocent girl. If thought religiously, this simile may have been said to show that we are all God’s children, because God was a Shepard and we are represented as His lambs. Both spoke of themselves in their stories in the first person and in plain style, referring to themselves as, â€Å"I. Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano had somewhat similar but different attitudes and tones. Both held captive, Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano felt all but jolly during their times of captivity. Olaudah did not even feel like he needed to eat food on his journey aboard the slave ship. â€Å"I became so sick and low that I was not able to eat. † (72) Olaudah felt gloomy during this period of time. â€Å".. With the loathsomeness of the stench and crying.. † (72) Olaudah felt afraid and apprehensive during the ship ride. This wretched situation was again aggravated by the galling of the chains, shrieks of the women, and groans of the dying, all of which rendered the whole a scene of horror almost inconceivable. † (73) Mary Rowlandson felt gloomy half of the time, while the other half of the time she felt hopeful towards God. â€Å"This sorrowful world.. † (2) and Psalm 27 (3) are quotes from her excerpt that expressed the emotions she had. The emotions these authors had are elements that help to give the purposes of these narratives. A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson and From Africa to America both have purposes to entertain and inform readers with their life experiences and tales. Mrs. Rowlandson’s provides faith and hope that trying times will be overcome by the love and mercy of God. Mr. Equiano’s tale informs readers of the grief that Africans went through because of the selfishness white men had to own slaves. Olaudah’s story may be seen as a reminder that people in the latest generation have things easy compared to the time he was alive. People should not take what they have for granted, for example freedom. The people of today have the most freedom than ever before. Although two different authors wrote these works of literature, A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson and From Africa to America, both stories possessed similar and different elements of writing. These tales were worthy of comparing because they had various things to review, contrast, and realize, such as the worship they had or didn’t have for God, their experiences, and their styles. Confused By Your New SAT Score 2 Controversies, Explained SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips With the launch of the redesigned SAT in March of 2016, a new era was born in standardized testing. While the College Board was hopeful that there would be no issues with the new test or its familiar scoring system (maximum score of 800 per section), unfortunately there have been scoring issues that are confusing and upsetting students. Furthermore, the College Board has managed to irk its arch nemesis, the ACT. In this article, I’ll break down these controversies and explain what they mean for you. The New Scores Are Inflated The biggest issue with the new scores seems to be that scores on the redesigned SAT are slightly higher compared to those from the old SAT. For example, a 1300 on the new SAT corresponds to a 1230 on the Math and Critical Reading sections of the old test. A 730 on the new Math section is equivalent to a 700 on the old one. Here’s a chart comparing the old combined SAT scores to the new ones. New SAT scores were multiplied by 3/2, so all scores could be out of 2400. Basically, this chart reveals what the new SAT scores equate to on the same scale as the old SAT. At almost every point along the curve, the new SAT score is roughly 80 points higher than you would expect from the old SAT. After students got back their scores from the first administration of the new SAT, many were very happy with their scores until they learned that their scores were not as good as they thought. His score wasn't as good as he thought. Why Are the Scores Higher? We believe that the scores on the new test are higher because of the elimination of the penalty for wrong answers. The College Board didn’t compensate for the higher raw scores that inevitably result from no guessing penalty and one fewer answer choice. Other than at the lowest score levels, the same percentage score equates to roughly the same scaled score. If you got 60% of the questions right on the old SAT Math, you would receive the same scaled score (out of 800) that you would receive if you got 60% of the questions correct on the new SAT Math. For example, from the chart you'll be able to see that getting 40% of right answers on the new and old SAT would get you a score of a little less than 500. However, because there’s no penalty for guessing and one fewer answer choice, students will get a greater percentage of questions right on the new test, if the tests are equally difficult. Most likely, this was a deliberate decision by the College Board. But why? There are a few possible reasons. The College Board may have wanted scores to be higher to raise satisfaction with the test. The redesign was motivated in part because the SAT was losing market share to the ACT. If students start to get higher scores on the SAT, that could motivate more students to opt to take the SAT vs. the ACT. Also, more states are adopting the SAT as a mandatory state test. Because all students in certain states will be taking the SAT as opposed to just college-bound students, scores from the old test and new test may become more equal over time. In addition to inflated scores, there's another scoring controversy that involves converting new SAT scores to ACT scores. Are the Concordance Tables Accurate? In early May, the College Board released concordance tables that allow students to convert old SAT scores to new SAT scores. These tables also allow you to convert old and new SAT scores to ACT scores. You can use our conversion tools that are based on these tables. While the ACT and College Board previously collaborated in 2006 to create a concordance table so students could convert old SAT scores to ACT scores and vice versa, the two groups didn’t work together on the recently released table that enables conversion of the new SAT scores to ACT scores. The CEO of the ACT, Marten Roorda, claimed that because the College Board didn’t collaborate with ACT on the table that the College Board’s table can’t be accurate. Concordance tables are created using equipercentiling, which means that a 75th percentile score on one test is equivalent to a 75th percentile score on another. A 90th percentile score on the ACT is equivalent to a 90th percentile score on the new SAT. Roorda argued that there can’t be accurate percentile scores on the new SAT because there had only been one administration of the test when the tables were released, and the students who took the first test may not be representative of students as a whole. He claimed that a year’s worth of tests and data was needed before the College Board could effectively equipercentile. The College Board’s senior vice president for research, Jack Buckley, responded by stating that the concordance tables aren’t only based on the March 2016 SAT. Bonn in A Comprehensive Dictionary of Literature, a novel is a ‘long fictional narrative in prose, which developed from the novella and other early forms of narrative.’ Additionally, E.M. Forster in attempting to the define the term ‘novel’ in Aspects of the Novel cites the definition of a Frenchman named Abel Chevally; ‘a fiction in prose of a certain extent’ and adds that he defines ‘extent’ as over 50,000 words. The novel tends to depict imaginary characters and situations but may include references to real places, people and events. Even though its characters and actions are imaginary, they are in some sense representative of real life. The emergence of the novel in its recognizably modern form, unlike the emergence of drama and poetry, can be traced back to Europe in the 18th century. The various factors that gave rise to the novel in English, which are more or less interrelated, include the rise of literacy, the explosion of the printing culture as well as the rise of individualism. One factor that gave rise to the novel in English was the rise of literacy. The novel emerged as a fully evolved literary form in the mid-eighteenth century in Samuel Richardson’s ‘Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded. A novel is usually organized under a plot of theme with a focus on character development and action. The novel is a young genre, a tiny infant indeed in comparison to poetry and drama, both of which seems to be as old as humanity. The educational system was not influenced significantly by the scientific revolution prior to the Enlightenment. Prior to the 17th and 18th century, literacy was generally restricted to males who belonged to the categories of nobles, mercantile, and professional classes but with the development of the education system, education was now provided to all classes. The literacy rate in Europe from the 17th century to the 18th century grew significantly. With the rise in literacy there was now a public demand for the novel. There were changes in the public cultural institutions, such as libraries and museums. The public libraries were now funded by the state and were accessible to everyone for free. Prior to the Enlightenment, libraries in Europe were restricted mostly to academies, aristocratic and private owners. During the 18th century, the price of books were too high for the average person, especially the most popular works such as an encyclopedias. Therefore, the public libraries offered commoners a chance of reading literates that could only be afforded by the wealthier classes. Thus the average, run of the mill individual who felt that need to put their thoughts to paper did exactly that and could do so effectively because of their educational exposure. Another factor that gave rise to the novel in English was the explosion of the printing culture. The modern novel is said to be the child of the printing press which is strongly connected to the rise in literacy. The number of books being published in the period of Enlightenment increased dramatically due to the increase in literacy rate and the increase in demand for books. Now that more people were literate, more people wished to write. Yet, prior to the inception of the printing press, writers would have to literally write their texts by hand. This proved to be very monotonous and discouraged many writers from penning books. However, the explosion of the print culture in the 18th century was both the result and cause of the increase in literacy. The number of books being published in the period of Enlightenment increased dramatically due to the increase in literacy rate and the increase in demand for books. There was a shift in interest in the categories of books, in the 17th century, religious books had comprised around half of all books published. However, throughout the century, the percentage of traditional genres such as religion has dropped to one-tenth by 1790 and there was an increase in popularity for the almanacs. Yet another factor that gave rise to the novel in English was the rise in individualism. Individualism is one of the cornerstones of the Enlightenment. It is a philosophy stressing the recognition of every person as a valuable individual with inalienable, inborn rights. Individualism highlighted man’s ability to reason, to look past the traditions and conventions that had dominated Europe in the past, and to make decisions for himself. Moreover, these ideas represented the separation and autonomy of man’s intellect from God—a development that opened the door to new discoveries and ideas and threatened the most powerful of Europe’s long-standing institutions. People were now writing about other people who were just like them.

I found him easy to talk to and I could talk to him about everything. In school we had separate friends but when we got home we would always talk about what happened in school. One day I said to him that a guy I liked hurt me and broke my heart. He just comforted me and said everything would be okay. He gave me words of encouragement and helped me get over him. I was happy and thought of him as a real friend. But I knew that there was something else about him that I liked. I thought of it that night and figured it was just a Friend kinda thing that I was feeling. All through high school and even through graduation we're always together and of course I thought of it as being friends. But I knew deep inside that I really felt differently. On graduation night even though we had different dates to the prom I wanted to be with him. That night after everybody went home I went to his house and wanted to tell him that I wanted to see him. Well, that night was my big chance and all I did was just sit there with him watching the stars and talking about what I was going to do and what he was going to do. I looked into his eyes and listened to him talk about what his dream was. How he wanted to get married and settle down. He said how he wanted to be rich and successful. All I could do was to tell him my dream and cuddle next to him. I went home hurting because I didn't tell him how I was feeling. Americans are always â€Å"plugged in,† and our access to media has a greater effect on our choices than ever before. People must learn that Just because something is being reported in the media does not mean it is true. This lesson goes all the way back to the beginning of â€Å"modern media,† starting with the television. One cannot trust everything he sees being advertised.Most advertisements are overly exaggerated and sometimes manipulative, Just to persuade consumers to buy a product, vote a certain way, or believe in a certain thing. For instance, in the 1930s America's first â€Å"drug czar† Harry J. Anslinger began one of the world's greatest public relations campaigns to demonize marijuana by telling apparent lies to society, such as marijuana is more harmful to the body than alcohol and tobacco. Seventy years later people still believe the lies even after decades of scientific proof.Because media can have significant influences on our opinions, the American public as a whole need to be more aware of it on a daily basis. The media has a responsibility to use only truthful explanations as opposed to exaggeration when arguing against the egalization of marijuana. The campaigns that Anslinger designed consisted of many movies, musicals, and advertisements, all aimed at demonizing the usage of marijuana. His main argument against the use of marijuana was that smoking it could drive a person insane. Every single one of his claims omitted some very important facts, which made the advertisements misleading.Study after study over the years has proved that marijuana is way less dangerous than alcohol or tobacco, and it is not a â€Å"gateway drug† leading to the usage of other drugs. For example in the article posted by Paul Armentano he says, â€Å"In the United States alone, an estimated 79,000 lives are lost annually due to excessive drinking. † Anslinger promoted these false claims to the general public for the sole reason of making sure that marijuana remained illegal. He even tried to say that a kid from Florida killed his father, mother, two brothers, and sister was due to his newly formed habit of smoking marijuana.That was a very far- fetched claim, even for those who supported keeping marijuana illegal. But, it did stick with a vast majority of people, and to this day marijuana is still illegal in almost every state. However, the longstanding tradition of keeping it illegal is slowly changing. As of the most recent election, there are eighteen states in the U. S. that have legalized the plant for medicinal usage, and two states, Washington and Colorado, have recently legalized the recreational usage of the plant as well.One would think after 70 years of proven studies on marijuana that more states would have made efforts to legalize marijuana by now. Keeping marijuana illegal due to it s â€Å"dangerous† effects seems especially hypocritical, in light of the fatalities that are associated with alcohol and tobacco use every year. Four percent of all deaths in America annually are due to the consumption of alcohol. To this day there has not Magazine â€Å"No one has ever died of THC [marijuana] poisoning, mostly because a 160- lb. person would have to smoke roughly 900 Joints in a sitting to reach a lethal dose. In light of that statistic, it is astonishing that alcohol is used so casually every day by millions of people, yet marijuana remains illegal. In my opinion I think that alcohol should be illegal not cannabis. The mass media should be obligated to present factual information and not over exaggerate claims on behalf of marijuana, because he public needs to know the truth. Every citizen has the right to unbiased, truthful information, and we should be able to trust the media to give this information to us.One of the 1930 anti-mariJuana advertisements t hat was particularly inaccurate was an advertisement with images degrading anything associated with marijuana. It showed a devil in the background with the weasel words â€Å"sin,† â€Å"vice,† â€Å"insanity,† and ‘degradation† scattered around the fgure. It also has a Joint in the middle with the words â€Å"the smoke of hell†. That is obviously promoting exaggerated and inaccurate nformation to someone who has not been able to get both sides of the story. Back when this advertisement was made the â€Å"Ethos† portrayed would be a lot different nowadays..In the 1930s that ad had Just enough credibility to the average citizen to persuade them to agree because a majority of the popular culture was not educated on the subject. A person uneducated on the subject will be easily persuaded into believing that marijuana is dangerous, without understanding the full picture. Using the devil's image to promote anti-mariJuana beliefs is like usin g God's image when selling a product. If one has to use either of those images in an advertisement, he must be really desperate to sell or promote something because there are a lot of other less suggestive images that could be used.However, the message to refrain from smoking marijuana is not completely inaccurate either, especially in states where it remains illegal. A good reason to stay away from marijuana is that it is simply illegal, and no one wants to go to Jail. Other people believe that cannabis should only be used if it is absolutely needed for medicinal reasons. Smoking cannabis impairs your ability to function normally and do daily activities, such as driving. The effects are not as strong as alcohol but can still be enough to be considered being impaired.The effects of smoking tobacco are more minor than the effects of alcohol and marijuana, and therefore daily use of the product is more acceptable. Even though it may cause long-term health effects, cigarettes can be sm oked daily without causing any harm to other people. It is understandable why these products are still legal in the United States, because it is hard to change the law after many years of selling the product. Our government would lose a lot of money if either alcohol or tobacco were illegal because of the pecial tax that many states levy on cigarettes.And the government is mainly focused on clearing their debt, and that would be detrimental towards the economy. They also provide thousands of Jobs to citizens. The alcohol and tobacco industries contribute significant tax revenues to the federal, state, and local governments. In conclusion, the choice to support the legalization of marijuana is influenced by many factors, including religion, family, and values. However, it is also influenced by the media and the media's portray of marijuana as a dangerous substance.If the edia is going to play such an important role in affecting our choices, it should have mass media did not realize t hat what is shown to the popular culture on a daily basis could be so influential no matter how untruthful the advertisements might be. It is not fair for the government to know more information than society. So to be able to instill truthfulness the mass media cannot promote exaggerated claims like the one I mentioned earlier. Once an advertisement is out there, there is no getting it back. A human resource executive must know the key competencies of business in order to develop appropriate programs for the company. There are four main competencies a human resource executive must be aware of. The first is the business competence. This is knowing all about the company. The human resource executive must be aware of the company’s financial capa bilities. The business competence helps in making decisions that helps support the company’s strategic plan. This competence also deals with both monetary and nonmonetary business.The human resource executive must make decisions based on the amount of money available but also make decisions about other issues that do not require money. The next competence would be the professional and technical knowledge aspect of business. The human resource executive should know everything that regards to human resource management practices. They need to know everything and keep up with new programs and plans being applied to human resource departments. The human resource executive must be able to know what new programs can be used to benefit the company.The human resource executive also must be equipped in the ability to change. The HR executive must keep up with any change in the company. One minor change within the company’s strategy causes every department to change in a way. Cha nges might cause problems for departments. The human resource executive must be able to oversee these problems and choose the most efficient way to solve. The final thing the human resource executive must know is the integration competence. The human resource executive must be able to bring together all the competence to ensure the company’s value is up.All parts of the company’s human resource should work together to ensure the goal they are seeking to meet. With the knowing the different competencies for human resource, the executive should be able to develop different risk management programs for the company. The human resource executive should be very knowledgeable about the company and the external environment in order to assess what is needed. There are many jobs available in the field of human resource management with many different salary ranges. Of course, the top paying human resource job ould be senior human resource executive. A college degree and postgradu ate work are what most workers of the human resource profession have. Many companies train beginning human resource workers by letting them work in different departments of the business. When they eventually move up in the HR department they have a sense of how the business is ran. The path to being a senior human resource executive comes with time and experience. A person must always start at the bottom and make their way to the top.
